Beauty of Birth

Birth and Post-Natal Doula

My Story

Hi, my name is Kim Hughes and I am the proud Mum of four wonderful children.

Motherhood is one of the most amazing and humbling of experiences, and delivering children into this world is an awe-inspiring and miraculous journey.

The births of each of my children were unique, in so many ways, and while challenging, each perfect little individual who popped into my life, gave me the most profound experience of love and joy that I have ever known.

Having been made redundant in 2007, the opportunity arose for me to have a career change, and while I considered training as a midwife, my own natal experiences drew me to the role of a doula.

I felt that although NHS midwives provide an extraordinary level of service, they are often so over-burdened with workloads, that they do not have sufficient time to cater to the individual needs of parents at such a pivotal point in their lives.

I see pregnancy, birth, and the growth of a family as one of the most beautiful things about humanity. As a Doula, I am privileged to help women and their partners make these experiences as positive and healthy as possible. And it’s never surprising to me when another scientific paper proves the positive impact a doula can have on both the mother and family.

I am proud to have received my certification and privileged that I have been able to offer care to women and families across Berkshire, Oxfordshire, Hampshire and Wiltshire for over a decade.

Postnatal support

As your doula I am committed to your health and the wellbeing of your growing family,

I was so lucky to find Kim who is the most wonderful Doula. I knew straight away when I met Kim that I wanted her to support me during the birth if my second child. She is such a down to earth, warm person. She was very supportive in the run up to the birth and BRILLIANT in the hospital. She was so inventive of using different positions to help the process move on quicker by encouraging me to keep moving or vertical. It was the middle of the night so I really was tired but with her help I kept going. She also gave me a few special herbs to help along the way. I know if it hadn't have been for Kim I would have had to have had a C section as the staff told me if the baby wasn't out in 1 min I would have to go for the cut. She kept me focussed and ever made me giggle during the labour. A really wonderful person. Thank you Kim for helping me deliver my gorgeous Lila.

Birth Doula for F, Adriazola

November 2012

As an Australian (with no family support) giving birth in the UK, I found Kim's support and knowledge second to none. She was always professional, but warm and open to my needs.  Kim's expertise in labour gave me the confidence to birth my daughter naturally and calmly, how birth should be. I wasn't planning a water birth, but having Kim there as support made it feel like the most natural and beautiful thing. Thank you Kim for everything you did for me and my family - we will never forget you!

Kim got me through my labour! Could not have done it without her support."

Birth Doula for Kelli & Fergus Sweeney  March 2009

She was awesome and like my mother. She gave me a lot of strength. Helped me physically, reminded me to do good breathing. Helped me with positions, walked with me and was very good."
"I think Doula's are wonderful. My first birth experience was in India and I did not have a doula. But in the UK, my second birth experience was good with a doula.

I could see that this was not just a job for Kim - It was an honour to have someone there to support me who put their heart and soul into doing what they do best! Being a Doula!
